2025-09-05 Carb Top Completion

Tonight, I had a two-hour window and decided to return to the shop to finish.  The carbs top refresh.   Last night, left the shop after trying to get the needle out and the adjustor.

Spray penetrating oil inside and let it sit overnight.  With too much force, the adjustor came out.  I get nervous doing this part because you need to hammer out the adjustor after you get the needle out.  It is a small brass piece.

Lots of crud

The o-ring is in there, under the crud.

This is what the crud looked like.  After very carefully cutting away the o-ring, and a little clean up with parts cleaner and metal polish.   I find brass parts really work better if they are polished and clean.

Install the new o-ring and spray down with silicon/Teflon lube.  This does three things: it makes it easier to install and protects the rubber over time.  It lubricates the rubber to make needle adjustments so much easier.

For the needle itself, the same treatment of a bit of metal polish on the brass and re-inserted into the piston to use it to clean the inside of the needle hole as well.  Used parts cleaner to remove the excess polish.  Now, when the needle is adjusted, it is a smooth operation

The needle was adjusted to the maximum 'out' position

A few turns on the adjustment tool and the maximum recessed position.  The default position will be the needle being just a hair below flush.   When I disassembled this, the need was almost the full 3/16' inside the piston.    This would explain the rich running situation

The use of the q-tips to clean inside the piston

A picture of the inner part of the piston where the needle and adjustor live.

All back together

Before installing it back in the body, I want to make sure the piston and dome have no issues with movement.

After putting the dome and piston back on the carb.  One more clearance check with the thunk test.   With the damper not filled, use your finger to lift the piston and let it drop.  You should hear a definite thunk.. If not, then something is not aligned.   This is more important on the SUs and the Zenith-Strombergs, but I do this test regardless.

More tomorrow

2025-12-01 Valve Cover Revisited

I am waiting on parts to arrive and procrastinating doing the rear brakes.  Decided to deal with the valve gasket.  It was leaking like craz...
