2025-10-03 The Left Indicator

Since refurbishing the right indicator, I took a look at the left.  It was working, but did saw in the harness a bulge!. Funky wiring.   I am getting the feeling that is what I am going to be chasing down.  Still have not figured out why the headlights won't flip down, but have a general idea.  Funky wiring!

Harness

The connector has seen better days as well

Reminded me of this

The connector was covered in paint as well.

I pulled off the electrical tape, and the wire simply broke from the butt connector due to corrosion

Frame

On taking the indicator out of the bumper, one of the mounting screws came free from the rest.  Pot metal at its best.  Then the other mounting screw came off.

Some repair is needed here.  But in the meantime, the parts were dirty, so into the sonic cleaner for a bath.

Clean Up

After the sonic cleaner, everything looks better.  The chrome was starting to flake off, as expected after 45 years

All the grease, grim, and road crap is gone.   Off the media blaster for the connector and the frame

Repairs

Since the original mounting screws are M5 decided to replace them with M5, and I had some 30mm ones.   The tests fit

Where the screw pulled out, a M5 screw works

For where the frame is missing and the hole is bigger than the screw head, a 30mm screw backed by washers on both sides.  With the lens in place, I made sure it would clear.  How to attach?  JB-Weld to the rescue!!!   I was good with JB here since it is not a highly stressed part.

Both screws were left overnight to cure.

Reassembly

The housing got painted and left to dry as well.  The inside got the reflective aluminium tape.  And the surround got 1/8 neoprene to form a gasket.

The wiring was done the same as the other side.   heat shrink connector and then dual dual-wall heat shrink over the top

Back in the Car

Using M5 nylocs and washers, the indicator housing was put back in the bumper. Since I am using nylocs, there is no need to stress the indicator pot metal, just tighten until snug

Next....

tackling the headlight and the missing high beam.

I am waiting on parts to arrive and procrastinating doing the rear brakes.  Decided to deal with the valve gasket.  It was leaking like craz...
